Portuguese, português or língua portuguesa, belongs to the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family. It is a widely-spoken macrolanguage and one of the world’s largest languages, ranking sixth after Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindi, and Arabic. Ethnologue estimates the worldwide population of first-language speakers of Portuguese at around 204.3 million people, while other estimates place the number at 215 million.
The Portuguese language is one of the most important spoken around the world today. Not only is it the sixth most spoken language in the world, but it also has a presence on almost all of the continentsUntil the 15th century, Portuguese and Galician formed one single linguistic unit, Gallego-Portuguese.
The first evidence for the language consists of scattered words in 9th–12th-century Latin texts; continuous documents date from approximately 1192, the date assigned to an extant property agreement between the children of a well-to-do family from the Minho River valley.
